On Monday 16th July we had a truly inspirational assembly when Ben Parkinson visited us. His bravery, determination, intelligence and sense of humour shone through as he talked about his recovery and progress as well as his fantastic Olympic Torch walk. The children then asked Ben a range of questions and came away realising that you can’t judge a book by its cover and inspired by his bravery. Ben’s final message was even if someone says you can’t do something, if you’re determined and don’t give up you can do it. We would like to thank Ben and his supporters for making the visit possible and Mrs Local who organised the contact.
The children’s Centre has a summer timetable of activities for over the holidays. Check the link for details.

Mrs McKay led the Years 5 and 6 in Ceilidh Dancing this afternoon. They all tried really hard and had a lot of success and enjoyment!
The snow has returned. If children bring wellies or boots with a change of school shoes in a bag we will let them out at playtimes and lunchtime if the snow is not too icey.
Thank you again for all your support at the Book Fair held during Parents’ Evenings. Over the four book fairs we have held you have raised over £1000 for us to spend on books for the library and the classrooms. The first boxes arrived today!
Following requests by some parents we have put the school calculation policy on the website in the policies section so you can see the methods that we use to teach addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Although some methods may not look like they are the most efficent, the intention is to get the children to understand the thinking behind what they are doing rather than just learning a method. Please feel free to come in and ask if you are unsure.
Our reading week starts on Monday 14th November with parents invited in from 8.45 to 9.15 am to read and do reading activities with their children. We are also officially opening our new library on Monday at 9.30am with the Friends of Hatchell Wood who have kindly donated £2000 for new furniture to make it a space that all the children can enjoy.
Children in Need Day is Friday 18th November.
We are going to have a non-uniform day with a suggested donation of £1. If your child would like to dress up in spots they are more than welcome to.
A couple of weeks ago year 5 and 6 had a visit from Chris Connaughton, a children’s author, who worked with the classes to inspire and motivate them in their writing. Chris returned to school today and signed copies of his books. The children thoroughly enjoyed their writing experiences and activities with Chris.
